Survival Awareness &
Active Shooter Preparedness

For Schools and Universities

Despite ongoing efforts, schools and universities continue to be a top target for active shooter and other critical incidents. While you may not be able to prevent the “bad actor” from his or her efforts, there are ways to prepare your staff, students, and facilities to minimize damage and reduce (or hopefully eliminate) casualties.

We hope you never have to ask:

“Did I do all I could to
protect our students and staff?”

Let’s face it: schools and universities face difficult challenges regarding security, and while some of these challenges can be easily addressed, others are simply inherent to the industry. However, there are steps that one can take to build a safer care environment, and RWSmith Education, Training, & Consulting is here to help.

In partnership with retired FBI Special Agent and SWAT Team Leader Matthew Campbell, we are now leveraging his 25 years of experience to make a series of LIVE training opportunities and services available to educational institutions across the United States.

Below are two ways we can help.

Students running in hall - Active Shooter Training

Let’s face it, not all school events happen in the classroom. Whether on a field trip, at a school-sponsored sporting event, or just going through your day on a weekend, it is imperative to have a plan. Survival Awareness training centers around Retired FBI Special Agent Matt Campbell’s extensive experience with critical incidents, such as active shooters, assaults, kidnapping, and information obtained from thousands of actual FBI cases. Under stress, people often make one crucial mistake, and that one mistake can lead them down the path of becoming a victim of violent crime. This training teaches people how to avoid making that one mistake by having a plan for their physical safety at work, a sporting event, a mall, a restaurant, or any public setting. The training delves into what bad guys seek in their victims and how not to be “that person.” Additionally, some of the training is about child safety and keeping our children safe in today's dangerous world. People leave this training feeling empowered by their new set of skills, which makes them confident they will make the right decisions for their safety and the safety of their families.

This education will prepare employees to:

  • increase situational awareness

  • anticipate problems

  • avoid patterns

  • train their minds

  • avoid being a target

  • know how to flee and how to fight if necessary

  • protect their students, children and loved ones

Active Shooter Preparedness Training

There are varied approaches to preparing for an active shooter. Still, the FBI’s proven “Run, Hide, Fight” education program, paired with customized evaluation and planning for each specific facility, has proven to be the best program available to meet the special needs of educational institutions. Retired FBI Special Agent Matthew Campbell (bio available here) provides unique insight and experience as he draws on his 25 years of experience dealing with active shooters and other critical incidents.

Many companies offer group training, but RWSmith ETC’s staff offers one-on-one strategy sessions with your staff in their most common work areas. Where to hide, how to lock down, and where to run (escape) are questions that should be answered and practiced based on many varying factors, and RWSmith ETC’s staff ensures those questions are answered on a case-by-case and individual basis.

When critical incidents occur, it is natural to panic if we do not have a well-thought-out and well-practiced plan. During one-on-one training, the RWSmith ETC team will quickly and efficiently discuss strategies and execute walk-through practice sessions with your staff in the places where they spend most of their time.

Let’s face it: While the traditional “Run, Hide, Fight” training is a start in most cases, education has an additional duty to protect students at all costs. We will work with you to strengthen your response while supporting your established protocols.
